Roots Studio | United States
Roots Studio boosts the livelihoods of rural artists by giving them the technology and training to digitize their art at minimal cost, circumventing an otherwise burdensome supply chain. By transacting art digitally, the organization enables village artists to increase the overall lifetime value an art piece from its current status quo of $5-$10 a pieces to >$900. Digitization allows rural artists to go from one-time sales to distributing globally, licensing on mediums like apparel and stationery, and receiving their payment share instantly through wire transfers.
The team has worked with over 800 artisans throughout India, Indonesia, and Panama, holding 600 art pieces in their repository. The core theory of change is increasing income through local skills as an alternative to urban migration. Roots Studio is affiliated or has been supported by Echoing Green, MIT100K, MIT IDEAS Challenge, MIT Legatum Center, GirlBoss Foundation, and Stanford StartX.
